A. The chrome is gone in the pitted areas, Joyce. Chrome shine should remove the rust, merely you'll take to constantly keep information technology waxed or information technology will re-rust because at that place is no longer whatever plating betwixt the steel and the exterior globe in those pitted areas.

It won't be cheap, but you lot might consider having it replated by a plating shop. Good luck.

Q. Hi;
I am restoring an old baby carriage for my soon-to-come first grand-girl, the same one nosotros used 30 years agone for her mother. A. The nickel-chrome plating is rusting because later all these years it is at present porous, George. The correct restoration is to ship it to a plating shop for replating. Simply if y'all tin't afford that, you lot can clean it up with chrome smoothen; then, keeping it well waxed and dry will deter rusting quite a bit. Good luck.

Q. Howdy I recently bought a babe stroller. I was wanting to know where I could discover more than info on it. Its a pull blazon (has like a wagon handle) two 11 inch wheels with two small-scale wheels in the back to kept it from tipping over backwards (like wheelie bars on a drag auto). It looks like it has a removable shade (which I think I am missing some pieces) that stores under the seat when not in employ. The seat folds dorsum when baby is sleeping and it folds frontward and handle folds back when non in use. Also has wicker sides. I found it in due south.e. Iowa don't know if that will help any. Cheers, Mike.

Restoring metal babe carriage frame, 1940s?

September eight, 2008

Q. Hullo! I recently acquired an old infant carriage, and working with vintage metal is all new to me. It seems to accept all the pieces except the wheel covers. So far I don't run into whatsoever brand or symbols on it but information technology is in drastic need of cleaning... My question is what practise you advise for cleaning and and then restoring the metal, including the wheels? I actually want to salvage this slice. The metal seems solid, just very greasy and dirt covered, also scratched. Some rust. The carriage handle, which is one long rounded handle fastened on both ends to the frame looks to be plated considering the silver is somewhat scratched through and shows the nighttime metal underneath. I am looking for as much information equally possible or farther contacts to go to, on how to clean and restore the metallic frame and wheels, as afterwards that I volition have to movement on to re-covering it.

July 7, 2009

A. Hi, Posey. Back in the days of that railroad vehicle, carbon tetrachloride (Carbona) was the ane matter that would work instantly and perfectly on white vinyl. It is toxic and has been banned from consumer products for a long time, and then I dubiety that y'all will detect information technology. You might very cautiously endeavor a white wall tire cleaner like Bleche-Wite [affil. link to info/production on Amazon] on the upholstery since you'll want information technology for the tires anyway.

RFQ: I've been cleaning up a railroad vehicle that my in-laws gave us to use as a bassinet and buggy. The carriage is missing a chrome handle that is "S" shaped and fastened to the upper finish of the buggy.I think the carriage was manufactured in the 1960'south, it's blue with a little window for the kid to wait out of when they go large enough. You lot can likewise adjust the angle at which you prop the "rider." Are there restorers or people who have these parts on manus? I'd buy another carriage just for the part merely I don't know where to look aside from craigslist and ebay.

A. Hullo Vincent. It's probably possible to re-chrome without removing the rivets. Merely the cost volition probably be a shock. Take a await at our "Introduction to Chrome Plating" to understand why it's going to have them a couple of hours of handwork; and unfortunately they can't work any cheaper than your plumber or auto mechanic :-(

Q. I recently purchased a very erstwhile wicker baby buggy/wagon which is attack a steel frame and wooden spoke wheels. The prophylactic is gone from 3 of the 4 wheels as well as the metal frame appears to have been painted black, or over age has turned and so. The metallic is very rusted or corroded equally well.

Questions, i. where to find replacement safe for the wheels, and
2. how to get almost cleaning or sanding down the metal to clean information technology up to repaint it.

Likewise the caps in the middle of the wheels are about inch and a one-half in diameter and are silver and have the initials 'HW' ornately embossed on all 4 wheels. Q. Many of the one-time wicker babe carriages, such as those made by Hedstrom Union have metal wheels that are wrapped with solid safe. Often the wheels are in skilful condition or can be restored, but the rubber is usually desperately croaky.

Q. I have a baby carriage similar to those I read about on this site. It's 40 years old. I need to find hood fabric and edging, inside material, which is of a quilted plastic sort, and a handle bar for it. I have the metal that holds the handle bar, but the plastic bar itself is broken in one-half. Information technology is nonetheless intact because of the metal that goes through it. I sympathise I tin take the chrome parts to a machine shop and have that restored.

The carriage needs to be painted unless I can shine it upwardly with a high sheen cleaner or a polisher. I know a paint used on cars may work if I take to go that route, but it would have to be done professionally. I can find no visitor in the USA that restores carriages such as these.

I don't need wheels, only the wheels and spokes demand to be cleaned upwardly. The woods that holds the carriage mattress is warped and smells of mold. It looks to be some kind of human being made brown board, very smooth and about a half inch in thickness.

Any help given would be highly appreciated.
